Is there actually a daemon running?

yes, it is!

I ran the pilight-daemon with -D and its saying connection lost.

That's because you also have another pilight instance running on the same network. Check the adhoc network page on pilight.org

@CurlyMo: IMO: To make it n00b proof, there should be a message imo telling that "there is already another instance running on the same network" ...
I know people should read the manual, but the more messages the less questions on the forum Wink

It already does:

Third line.

I mean when running a bin like pilight-receive it just stops without a message.
http://forum.pilight.org/attachment.php?aid=401

Some people start to experiment by running a second Pi without the knowledge is automatically connects to the other Pi. Many even don't know it's possible I guess Wink

A good message makes them search for the right solution on the wiki/forum/site. N00b proof means alot of messages ...

I want to change the current behavior altogether so users can get something like this:
Code:
# pilight-receive
To which pilight-daemon do you want to connect:
[1] 10.0.0.145
[2] 10.0.0.205
[3] 10.0.0.110

Default [1]:

That would be very helpful and also save us from having to stop the main daemon when receiving new device codes on a different RPi because it spams the console with the datetime protocol Smile
